Our lives were disrupted yesterday, as if the events of 2020 were not already enough of a gut-punch. The events that occurred at the United States Capitol, and in similar violent demonstrations across the country are in direct opposition to the very core of our democracy. These actions severely undermine the democratic election process and the sacredness of the vote. Each of us may choose to exercise our freedom to vote for whomever we select and our right to vote is guaranteed by law. A peaceful transfer of power between administrations has been a staple of the American democratic process. What occurred yesterday was an attempt to override the will of the people in the 2020 presidential election outcome, one that can only be disputed by the perversion of thought through social media. It was an attempt to override the democratic process that our country is founded upon. It is a stain on our history and it does not represent who we are and who America is.

We are choosing to take a stand against terrorism, violence, the spread of misinformation, and threats against the democratic process. We trust the election process, thank all the election workers, and officials, who worked tirelessly throughout the election. We recognize, and congratulate, President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris on their victory.

It doesn’t matter who you voted for. We are choosing to start this new year fresh and with a focus on personal introspection, examining our own biases (known and unknown), seeking common ground, transparency, rebuilding, and healing as a community, a nation, and the world. Everyone belongs, values, and is an equal human being. There is no better time than now to be on the right side of history and we invite you to join us by getting involved in local causes that you feel passionate about, donating to a charity (or your local food bank), and by standing up for democracy and equality for all.
